Giving CPR to Babies Under 1 Year

Step-by-Step

  1. Baby lying on back, with person leaning over baby saying baby’s name and tapping baby’s foot.

    1. Tap the baby's foot and shout their name.

  2. Phone with emergency number on screen, showing call being made.

    2. Call 911, or ask someone else to call.

  3. Hand reaching for AED in open cabinet.

    3. Ask someone to get an automated external defibrillator (AED) if one is nearby.

    4. Put the heel of one hand below the nipple line.

    5. Using the heel of your hand, push hard and fast.

  6. Hand pushing down giving compressions at a rate of 2 compressions per second.

    6. Give 30 compressions, about 2 per second.

    7. Compress the chest about 1½ inches.

    8. Gently tilt the baby’s head back. Do not tilt the head or chin if you think there is a neck injury.

    9. Take a normal breath.

    10. Put your mouth over the baby’s mouth and nose.

    13. Give another breath.

    14. Restart chest compressions right away.

  15. An AED and an ambulance.

    15. Repeat CPR until help arrives, an AED is ready to use, or the baby is breathing normally.
